32. The History and Architecture of Knowsley Hall

The history of one of the finest and most significant stately homes in Britain ~ Knowsley Hall, and of the Stanley Family who continue to occupy it.

In this talk Ken briefly introduces some of the most historically important members of the Stanley family ~ the Earls of Derby. However, this talk concentrates on their stately family seat, in what is now a suburban district of the City of Liverpool.
He tells how the building began its life as a humble (by aristocratic standards) hunting lodge, but then over the centuries how it was added to and changed into a magnificent palace, set in thousands of acres of landscaped estate.

Learn about its architects and artists who each contributed to the changes and developments, as Ken takes you on a virtual, personal guded tour through its rooms and corridors. This will give you insight into how the family lived, and continues to live, whilst they play their part in the economic and cultural life of Merseyside, and beyond.
